Are Your Ski Legs Ready?

© Jerri Brooker

The crispness in the air signals fall, and thoughts of powdery snow begin to dance in all skiers' minds. (Okay, I admit it: some of our snow we call Cascade concrete.) Warren Miller movies appear around the state. Ski swaps appear overnight. Boards and skis are waxed and ready to go.

It's almost ski season! Are you ready?

Get psyched at a Warren Miller ski movie beginning November third in our state. Catch the dates and locations where you can see "Winter," this year's Warren Miller movie, at the Crystal Mountain Ski Area website (below). Crystal Mountain is featured in the movie. "Winter" is a great fix before the snow falls for all you skiers and boarders suffering from withdrawal.

Washington State has ski areas to die for: Crystal Mountain, Stevens Pass, Mission Ridge, The Summit at Snoqualmie, Mt. Baker Ski Area and White Pass. We like to wander out of the state to Whistler in British Columbia, Mt. Bachelor in Oregon and Big Mountain in Montana, too.

Get your ski legs on, folks, and hit the slopes!

Ski areas in Washington State generally open around Thanksgiving. All the starved skiers and boarders are lined up at the lifts, ready to schuss. The excitement is in the air. You won't see any frowns. Skiing is phenomenal around the state and demand is high. As skiers ready their gear, laughing and excitedly waiting for snow lifts to open, they are primed. They can't wait to carve the mountain. Boarders are ready. Ski resorts get their employees up to speed for the crunch on the first day of skiing.

Catch the drift!

We started skiing in our early 40's when our kids were out the door to college (couldn't afford it before). It was a passion with us; we went every week-end. We even took winter vacations so we could ski. It was in our blood. We could hardly wait every year to ride the train to Whitefish, Montana, and ski our hearts out. I used to sell real estate in Utah, and my broker helicopter skied at Utah's Snowbird. I didn't know what I was missing then. I sure do now.

With the first day of snow etched in our minds, we watch ski movies and extreme skier Glen Plake (at our age - you bet!!). We read every ski magazine there is. By the way, I met somebody on a flight home from Reno a few weeks ago that had just learned to water ski at Lake Tahoe with Glen Plake as her instructor! To die for!

Hi Jerri, what a delightful article. I haven't skied in years, and never was good at it. In Austria, we used to ski on wooden, makeshift skis, and loved it. But that was when I was a kid, and much ...
