Surprises Around the State

I'm flittering around the state today. There are so many great places and stories in our state, I can't decide. So I am taking you all over the place for today's article.

Join me, won't you?

Washington State from 1998 statistics has 5,685,300 residents. King County (Seattle area) folks number 1,665,800; Spokane County (City of Spokane area) folks, 410,900. That leaves 3,608,600 folks in a lot more places. Hope some of you tell me hello as you cruise through this site and visit people and places in Washington.

For starters, let's visit some pioneer sites prior to these statistics. Are you with me?

Jerry Smith of Okanogan County in Northeastern Washington has a great Boom Town and Relic Hunters Site that is a "must see." Ghost Town History in that region of the state is Jerry's specialty. Read about the history of miners, prospectors, pioneers and boom town history. There's information on Metal Detecting and Relic Hunting; be sure to read the Treasure Hunter's Code of Ethics.

Jerry encourages you to add to his historical site if you have information. Like an old photo or a story you might know. Leave him a note. Bookmark his site, as it's worth many looks.

Now why didn't my Washington State History teacher tell us about all of this interesting information in my youth? Okay, I admit the internet didn't exist then, but the ghost towns did. Now, how about some folk stories?

How many of your have heard the tall tales of Paul Bunyan? As a kid, I remember going to Shelton and seeing the statue of Paul Bunyan. I found this great site that has Paul Bunyan locations in ours and other states. Fun! It's great to be a kid once in a while.

Go there and enjoy what you find, but then come back to this site for some more goodies around the state. I don't know what happened to Paul Bunyan and Babe Ruth, big as life, as you entered town there when I was a kid. Next time I am in Shelton I will have to ask some questions and find out. Shelton is a logging town, that has had its ups and downs. The character of the community still lives, even with modernization.

Head up North. Way up North. Mt. Baker Ski Area, to be exact. The area holds the WORLD record for snowfall the '98 and '99 season at 1,140 inches - certified by NOAA! The previous year's record was held by Mt. Rainier. I will be talking about snow and ski areas soon. (Right now we'd like some more summer, please!) I've never been to Baker, but I've been to a lot of other areas in the state.
