Vancouver, WAVancouver's a beautiful city situated on the Columbia River north of Portland, Oregon on Interstate 5. The city extends to the middle of the Columbia River Bridge heading into Portland, Oregon, where you will view ocean liners and small fishing boats galore. It's in the southwest corner of the state. In the Northwest boating spirit, Greg McKay of Vancouver has provided us with a wonderful cedar strip boatbuilding site for those wanting a challenging project. It lists plans to build boats, supplies and catalogs for the amateur cedar strip canoe or boatbuilder. Lots of pictures here of finished projects; you'll like this one. If you're the type that likes to get out and "do the city," then what better way than to go antique shopping? This list ought to get you on your way. I find that antique merchants often know a lot of history to go with their wares, and you can learn about an area by just visiting and striking up a conversation. Finally, this trip, a visit to the nearby Clark County Fair is on the agenda! If you are traveling south on I-5, you will pass the fairgrounds on the freeway. It's August 6-15th, and I just may make it there this year. I think county fairs are the best way to get the feel of a community. I would like to see the winning entry in the Clark County Dairy Women's Cheesecake Contest - yum! I want some strawberry shortcake. I like to ride the ferris wheel to get a good overview of what's going on. Then I visit the merchants to learn about the workings of the city. The animals are great. Baby pigs are my favorite! What's your favorite thing to do at the fair? This is fair season, and I don't want to miss one. The shows are great. The food is great. I can't wait! Meet me at the fair! I'll be the one eating cotton candy and enjoying everything. See you there! This has nothing to do with Vancouver, but if you are into US history this ghost town site is fun! Check out Washington State and wherever else you'd like to see. There's a lot of history hiding all over the place! Soon I will do another Seattle story and tell you about its history and underground tour. I'll also introduce you to the upcoming Bumbershoot Festival (at another editor's request).
