Port Angeles - My Home TownFarm where some animal actors live. I used to hunt for agates as a kid at Shi Shi Beach; it's private property now, so you probably will have to forego that site. Check here to start your educational tour about town and the surrounding area at Port Angeles. There are also some beautiful sights at Olympic Peninsula Washington State site. If you want a great view of the city, take the stairs from the Uptown Motel in the heart of town. (I used to know how many steps there are; I've forgotten, but it's a lot.) You need to be in good shape for this! Or head on out to Ediz Spit past the paper mill and look back toward town. The ferry link above has a good photo from there. Be sure to catch a good dinner at the Bushwacker Restaurant east of town - their planked fish dinner is excellent. I can almost taste it now! Time changes things. The town lost its JC Penney department store; after that its People's department store. Lamonts is the only department store in town now. The town is not too full of retailers, and there is no shopping mall big cities take for granted. Sad. The memories. I could reminisce for hours, but I won't bore you. My last family tie there, my sister, will leave for another place in a few weeks. Then the family presence will be gone on my side of our family. The memories remain. Take a visit to some of the links to get a better picture of the area. Better yet, go visit. It is a two-and-a-half hour drive from the state capitol, Olympia. Don't try to go via Hood Canal; the road is out and still being repaired. You will need to go through Tacoma and across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, then across the Hood Canal Bridge to get there. From Seattle and Edmonds there are ferries that route you on your way, then you drive across the Hood Canal Bridge to the Olympic Peninsula and the rest of the way there. Port Townsend and Sequim are other great towns along the way. Oh, WalMart is there. The Five and Ten Cent Store is gone. Some things stay around forever; some things change.
