Spokane - World 's Fair and Beyond

Saunter on over to visit Spokane, the largest city in Eastern Washington that boasts around 411,000 but feels like a small town. Get out of the rat race on the west side (sorry folks, but you have to admit we are outgrowing ourselves in the Seattle area), and savor the sunshine in this pleasant city of surprises. Riverfront Park on the Spokane River and the remains of the Spokane World's Fair at Mike Fuller's website are the first stop as you enter town.

So how many of you guessed the year of the Spokane World's Fair?

Congratulations! 1974 it is.

If you are fortunate to live here, you've probably been to both world's fairs in Washington State, the other in 1962 in Seattle. Spokane sticks in my mind the most, as it was a very hot day when we were there, and we ended up sleeping downhill in our camper at Steptoe Butte far from town, as there were no available camping sites nearby. (What, make reservations? Why who would think of that?) We were pretty crabby before the sandman came, but we had a great day in spite of it. Elephant ears, IMAX movie, ice cream, world views and culture, two kids in tow. Is there any other way to see a fair?

How about a tour of the local outdoors? Sit in your cozy spot and take the outdoor tour the next site has to offer.

The next view is the photo tour of the Spokane area. From the Spokane Indian Reservation to Hog Canyon (yes, there really is one), this is one of the prettiest area tours I've seen on the web. Read a thought from Chief Seattle here on the land acquisition.

Do you like to fish? Then get on out to East Medical Lake and get yourself some rainbow trout. What do you think of the opening day catch of the Jensen family, Spokane residents and CPA business folks? The largest were 18 inches long; we don't get the likes of them on the west side of the state!

If you're interested in the art scene, then take a look at this site.

Are you a biker (meaning bicycle)? You will hear some great music as you click on this site and revel in the speed biker's paradise on the Baddlands Cycling Club site.

As you head on out of Spokane (there's so much to see: we will return another day), expand your area horizons a bit at this Washington site. There are so many places to see, so many folks to meet, and so little time.
