Puget Sound Passion

© Jerri Brooker

When I want to escape the world or just enjoy the beauty of a major waterway in Washington State, I take a stroll on the boardwalk at Percival Landing in Olympia on the southern tip of Puget Sound. From there I see the Olympic Mountains, the Washington State Capitol, the Port of Olympia, sailboats and motorboats and houseboats some folks call home, the neighboring waterfront communities, and close by, the Olympia Farmer's Market. I don't have to go far to enjoy the picturesque beauty of our Puget Sound neighborhood. Whether masked by a rain-splashed background or shining in the rays of a golden sun, it's one of my favorite places to spend reflective time. Read what local newspaper writer, Jerre Redecker, has to say about Olympia at http://www.olympianrealestate.com/source...

On a clear day, the Olympic Mountains shine in the background. I turn 90 degrees and see the awesome Washington State Capitol. Percival Landing is a magical place as I stand looking at the wooden boardwalk sights with restaurants, a few shops and office buildings, a marina full of resident houseboats and other watercraft, views of waterfront homes and Puget Sound industry. The wooden boardwalk takes me to a favorite place: Puget Sound. This remarkable waterway boasts 900-feet deep waters in some places and defines coastal living in Washington State. Whether here in the city or along the Hood Canal, the views are awe-inspiring.

This Saturday and Sunday, May 8th and 9th, be sure to wander on down to Percival Landing and take in the Wooden Boat Fair. You will see some beautiful boats, arts and crafts, entertainment and activities for children - along with an international food court. Boat owners are giving tours. It's my favorite event in Olympia. Don't miss it.

My childhood memories of Port Angeles, my hometown on the Strait of Juan de Fuca south across the water from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, include times spent on the waterfront. They are different memories I will share later. For now, stroll with me down Puget Sound through a child's eyes at the web site, Kids for Puget Sound. Go to http://www.pugetsound.org/kids/default.h... Here kids can read about Puget Sound and its habitat, learn about salmon, join the Puget Sound organization and pledge to keep Puget Sound clean and beautiful, or take a quiz before or after visiting the site to see what they know about "the Sound" as we call it. Kids have a perspective we adults sometimes forget.
