What do you do when you're stressed? Do you read a book, exercise, visit friends? One of my favorite things to do is walk. I seem to find solace in nature, so when I need to get myself on track, I'm out the door and on my way to a refreshing experience.
There are lots of great places to walk in Washington besides your neighborhood. I'll share some of my favorite places to walk and hope you will, too, in the discussion area at the end of this article. I no longer live in western Washington, but when I did I headed to the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge to walk on their nature trail. I've written about it twice; here are the links: http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/wash... and http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/wash... . Have you been there? I'd love to read about your experience. It's a great place to see wildlife in its natural habitat and enjoy all nature has to offer. Walking in the woods and near the water is my favorite thing to do, unless I have time to travel to a mountain; that's my next favorite place to walk. Before Mt. St. Helens erupted in 1980 I used to enjoy hiking around the mountain and Spirit Lake, http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/wash... . Sometimes I like to walk in shopping malls or towns just to see what's there. I visit antique stores to travel to another time. It's fun to see what I can find and when it's familiar, such as a book from my childhood, good feelings come flooding back. One place I like to antique shop is Centralia, http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/wash... . Connecting with the past seems to override stressful thoughts of the present. Another great way to rid yourself of stress is to travel around and get away from the daily routine. I like to travel and walk Washington, http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/wash... . Some folks love to experience history. Visit an interesting bit of history, Lost Mines of the Pacific Northwest, http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/old_... . Now there's a prescription for getting your mind off your woes. If you like history, there are lots of towns that will take you back to another time, like Roslyn, a historical mining town, home to the television show, Northern Exposure: http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/wash... . When you wander the streets and get involved in another time, there's not room in your mind for sadness or stress. In the winter, I head for the snow. When you play in the snow, or just watch other folks playing and having fun, you will have a tendency to forget your troubles. This article provides links to Washington's ski areas: http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/wash... . If you don't ski, well, just watch others. It's refreshing. Go To Page: 1 2
