Gathering Your Christmas Tree in Washington

It's that time of year again; time to get your Christmas tree for the holidays. I get excited just thinking about it. Christmas is such a joyous time of year, and decorating is a lot of the fun. As I research farms and forests for your tree-gathering pleasure I smile and think of all the memories that go with the experience.

When it comes to Christmas tree buying pleasure, Washington is the Evergreen State, so there are certainly a lot of choices. You may buy your tree on a lot, but it is so much more fun to cut your own. Whether you choose to trek in the forest or go to a tree farm, there are lots of choices.

If you live in northwest Washington, in the Blaine or Bellingham area, there are lots of places to cut trees for your holiday home. Visit http://www.evalu8.org/staticpage?page=re... for a list of tree farms.

Looking for a tree near Arlington, Auburn, Elk, Deming, Mt. Vernon, Rainier, Redmond, Seabeck or Spokane? Then this is the site for you: http://www.christmas-tree.com/real/wa/ . I'm imagining all the fun you are going to have getting your tree.

When my kids were little we used to get our tree right next door in Poulsbo; we lived by a Christmas tree farm. Was that ever neat. Out the door, down the hill and a blue spruce was up in our living room in no time. Since most of you aren't that lucky, you'll have to drive to a tree farm, but there are a lot to choose from.

Perhaps you live in the Mt. Vernon, Arlington, Redmond, Everett, Granite Falls, Snohomish, Monroe or Sultan area; you may get your trees there via a map and description of local farms with easy directions, site courtesy of the Puget Sound Christmas Tree Association: http://www.pscta.org/north.htm . For a complete statewide listing visit http://www.pscta.org/all.htm . You'll find farms across the state at this site.

Do you have fond memories of getting your tree in the forest? Well, you can do that, too. Visit forest service offices to get a permit to cut a tree in the Okanogan and Wenatchee National Forest. The link to information is: http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/wenatchee/permit... .

The permit information to get a tree in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest is at http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/mbs/news/2003/nr... . The site for permit information for the Olympic National Forest is http://www.ptguide.com/recreation/tree.h... . If these areas aren't near you, then visit a forest service office in your area for more information.
