Did we ever have a great meal! I had salmon with a dill sauce and my husband had blackened salmon. Both of our entrees were cooked to perfection, accompanied by fresh vegetables, a good-sized baked potato, homemade roll and the salad bar. It's the kind of dinner you run across only so often that it is memorable enough to entice others to try it. You will be wowed.
The general store is fun to visit. We bought some wood postcards (yes, real wood and it only takes a first class stamp to send them) to send family at the village resort store and stepped into the Quinault Post Office for stamps. What a great experience we had there. We met fourth-generation Postmaster Mary Christiansen. She was a joy to visit and we learned more about the area history. She knew everyone who entered by first name and if she didn't know you she was ready for the task. It was a pleasure to meet her, a great lifelong member of the community whose husband is also the fire department chief. Her family homesteaded Northup in 1892. Her great grandfather founded the Seattle Post and even owned property where the Ballard Locks now sit. Her great grandfather was Washington State senator George Northup. Her great grandmother, grandmother and mother were Postmasters in nearby Clearwater. It was also a pleasure to meet Dave Morrison, manager of the Resort Village, along with his brothers, Don and Joe - they all have a hand in managing the resort. It doesn't take long to feel like a part of the community in this small piece of the world once you begin talking to the locals. While there, our rustic cabin was a great respite from the rain along with a blazing fire in the fireplace; they supply starter and wood. It would be a great family place, overlooking an expansive green lawn by the lake. I could envision a volleyball net and a wheelbarrow of fun. There is a sandy beach and it looks like folks take advantage of it in the good weather. It did clear up the next day so we could get a better look; the lake was beautiful. There were some sailboats moored at the water's edge. Looking to get away? Stay in the Lake Quinault Lodge if you are looking for rustic luxury; stay in the Resort Village if you are looking for a family place with lots of room to roam. There are also campgrounds nearby, Falls Creek and Gatton Creek National Forest campgrounds.
