Port Angeles - I Can't Stay Away!

I forgot my camera on this trip as we left in a hurry. Wish I could have shared some of the beautiful views with you. They're still there for the taking. I took a mental picture of the place in town that once was a skating rink over pilings (my sister reminded me); it's now filled in and vacant. The mill where my Dad worked has changed names again; it's now owned by Nippon Industries.

The town really hasn't changed much in the five years though. There are more antique stores and tourist traps. What really got me this time though: we went in the old Port Angeles Post Office across from Gottschalk's Department Store or First Federal Savings Bank to see the county museum inside. It was an interesting little museum with a lot on local logging history, the Klallam tribal history and a historical rendering of a couple who disappeared in Lake Crescent. The shocker: in a prominent case was a polyester sheath dress worn in the 1960's. I almost swooned; I wore those dresses in the 60's! And they're now in a museum. Where'd the time go? I'm not that old!

We had a great mocha at the Mambasa (please forgive me, town folks, if I got the name wrong - forgot to write it down) coffee house on First Street. We wandered back to Front Street and I took another memory lane trip to the Family Shoe Store where I used to get saddle shoes as a kid; they still sell them.

We had the best fish and chips at Traylor's restaurant east of town. They are known for them and with reason; I've not had better in years. We also ate a Joshua's, also east of downtown, good food. For a Chinese food experience, visit Tendy's Garden on First Street downtown - excellent, too.

Port Angeles has a lot of good restaurants: The Landing for seafood, right on the waterfront; the C'est Si Bon restaurant for French cooking and seafood east of town above Morse Creek; the Café Garden for breakfast at the east edge of town. I could go on and on, but my stomach doesn't have any more room.

It was fun to watch the ferry to Victoria load and unload and hear the familiar whistle. What I had forgotten was the courthouse clock ringing. I heard it at 10:00 p.m. and must have gone to sleep, so I didn't
