It Takes A Dollar

I hope I'm never too old to appreciate a bargain. And I really hope I'm never to old to appreciate a bargain that involves beer. There are two bars in D.C. that offer $1 Beer Nights, and even though I'm no longer an intern or just out of college or generally broke, I still appreciate a bar that allows you to show up right after work, stay for a couple of hours, and buy rounds for all your friends without making your wallet sore. Both bars exclusively serve Bud and Bud Light, but hey, at these prices complaints are not only frowned on, they should just be left at the door. Up on Capitol Hill, the Red River Grille is the place to be on Wednesday nights. This small Tex-Mex place is a well-known hangout for Democratic interns and young staffers. Show up earlythe bar area is almost entirely standing room only as it is, and the space fills up quickly on Wednesday nights. If you're hungry, ask for some chips and salsa at the bar, but don't ask the host or hostess for a table in the restaurant portion of the bar. The beer specials don't extend into that area, and they frown on surreptitious runs to the bar from a waiter- or waitress-served table. Downtown, the place to be is the Lucky Bar on Thursday nights. This bar is long and narrow and usually packed with an eclectic mix of people. There always seem to be a high quotient of recreational soccer players, and the only pool table usually has a long trail of quarters lined up by people waiting to play the winner of the previous games. There are far more seats at this bar, but they're often filled. Try to avoid the upstairs bar herethe seats there are often empty for a reason. They're a little too close to the men's room, which might be clean, but certainly doesn't smell good. While Happy Hour specials abound throughout the city, these are two of the best. Hit the ATM, pull out a Jackson, and turn Happy Hour into Happy Night. But don't forget to tip those bartenders.
