One of my favorite items on the sushi menu is also one of the most expensive. Sakana's dragon roll is a feast for the eyes and the tongue. The chefs drape a large slab of unagi over extra-large rolls of eelskin wrapped around rice, flying fish roe, avocado and tamago, the egg omelet. It's not raw, but it's delicious.

Another treat is the tempura roll, which actually arrives at the table in rectangular blocks rather than rolls. The rice is the base for a concoction of shrimp tempura, crab stick, avocado and flying fish roe. It is delicious, even if it's a little hard to eat.

Sakana does have its drawbacks. It is a few steps down off the street, so it's really not handicapped accessible. And the small room is packed with tables so close together that you feel like you're part of the conversations around you. On a weekend evening, the dinner crowd can get so noisy that it's hard to hear across the table. But with impeccable service and a great selection of fresh fish, it's worth a little closeness with your neighbor.

Sakana is located at 2026 P Street NW, near the intersection of P and 20th Streets NW. No reservations are required, but for information, call 202-887-0900.
