Are you looking for the perfect Valentine's Day activity? For the third year in a row, the Levine School of Music in Washington DC is offering Valentines a chance to have their sweetie serenaded, while raising money for the school's various programs.
The Levine School has been offering music education in the D.C. area since 1976, and the Valentine's Day Guitar Benefit Recital is just one of the ways it brings in funding for its lessons and music outreach. Members of the school's guitar faculty, including Franco Platino, Risa Carlson, Eric Ulreich, Kathrin Murray, Piotr Zielinski and Berta Rojas, will perform at the Mexican Cultural Institute on Saturday, February 14 at 8 p.m. Faculty-artists Kevin Vigil and Scott Stone will also perform during the evening. The recital will be followed by a dessert reception. The faculty hopes to raise $10,000 through this event to help underwrite guitar studies at Levine. Their goal is to make guitar lessons available to all students, regardless of their financial situation. The school itself is one of only fifteen community schools in the United States accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. More than 170 faculty-artists serve more than 3,500 students at four different sites in Maryland, D.C. and Virginia. The school offers myriad programs, including private instruction, academic courses, Early Childhood Music, performing ensembles, concerts and master classes. Many of their programs are available at a low cost, and the school offers and sponsors numerous free events, as well. The school's extensive website, located at http://www.levineschool.org, elaborates on the programs available and includes an extensive calendar of events. There is also an email newsletter that visitors can sign up for, and other information about volunteer opportunities and ways to make a tax-deductible donation to help support the school's programs. Registration is also available now for the 2004 summer camp program, "Ahoy, Mateys: Songs of the Seas," which provides full, half, extended a.m. and extended p.m. programs for children ages 3 ½ through 12. The camp focuses on a specific theme each year and uses that theme as a centerpoint from which students explore a variety of musical arts. At the end of the camp session, campers put on a presentation tying together everything they have learned. The Mexican Cultural Institute is located at 2829 16th Street NW, in Washington D.C. Tickets for the concert are $50 for premium seating, $35 for general admission and $20 for children 12 and under. http://www.instantseats.com/index.cfm?r=...>Online ordering Go To Page: 1
