Stranger Things To Battle It Out At Jaxx

As I've mentioned in a previous column, I'm the lead singer of a D.C.-area band called Stranger Things. Well, in June, my band will be taking part in the third annual Battle of the Bands at Jaxx. Call this shameless marketing, but I have inside information that tells me this will be the place to be on Thursday, June 5, when Stranger Things takes the stage. So, to that end, I present to you a list of Frequently Asked Questions about the performance.

What is Jaxx, anyway? Jaxx is a music club in Springfield, VA that makes a habit of supporting local bands in a truly professional environment. It's a fun place, with good food, decent drink prices, a kickin' sound system, and a great staff.

What is the Battle of the Bands? Stranger Things is one of four groups of very diverse musical styles playing the first night of Jaxx's 3rd Annual Battle of the Bands. There were 190 bands in last year's battle, and this year Jaxx expects even more bands to be involved when all's said and done. It's tough competition with some great prizes and industry exposure and good crowds. It's like Lollapalooza without the roadies and $50 tickets and Beastie Boys fans.

Isn't Jaxx really far from me (unless I live in Springfield or Annandale)? Nope, not really. For example, it takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes to drive from Pentagon City to Jaxx. Don't worry...this ain't the hinterlands we're talking about.

OK, OK. I'll drive it. How do I get there? Thanks. You are now officially the band's best friend. To get to Jaxx, take Exit 169, Rt. 644 West/Old Keene Mill Rd., off of I-95 in Virginia (right at the Springfield Mixing Bowl). Take Old Keene Mill Road for seven stoplights to the intersection of Rolling Road (7-Eleven on your left, Shell gas station on your right at this intersection). Turn left on Rolling Road and then take your first left into the Mattressland/Carpetland shopping center. It will look as if you're turning into a Mobil station, and Jaxx is directly behind that Mobil. The sign may be small...but the stage is large.

What time will you guys play? That's the wild card in the whole thing. The doors open at 7 p.m., and Jaxx will draw the order of the bands at 6 p.m. We won't know when we'll be playing until then. The goal is to have the audience see the whole show, which is certainly worthy. So we hope you'll get there when the doors open and stay all night, but regardless, please make sure you vote for us once
