Colonial Web Sites

This must be one of the most stimulating areas of wargaming. It has, by far, the most inspirational and well produced web sites. These wargaming web masters are an example to us all. Over recent years, this era in wargaming has been one of the most productive in terms of new figure ranges.

The standard by which Colonial web sites must measure themselves has got to be Major General Tremorden Rederring's Colonial Wargames Page. This British Empire wannabe from Texas has created an admirable and highly entertaining set of pages. If you need inspiration or are in any doubt as to the appeal of Colonial wargaming visit this site NOW.

For another inventive site, go and look at By Jingo. Presented in magazine format, the team of Dennis Bishop, Chris Feree, Andrew Preziosi, and Patrick R. Wilson provide a wealth of detail for the period. Editorials and articles are given on miniatures, rules and history and the site has a close connection to Larry Brom.

Ed Allen's The Khyber Pass is an excellent resource site for Colonial wargaming. He has included pictures of his own Colonial models and has a great array of 2nd Afghan War and Zulu War pictures from the Illustrated London News and The Graphic.

The Colonial Angle is a collection of photo game reports and assorted downloads of rules, scenarios, and other information for colonial war gamers. Steve Winter, the Angle, has created a site which showcases some of his campaigns and offers a couple of free rule sets. There are photographs of his miniature collection and a step-by-step illustrated description for the construction of the Suakin west redoubt, in the Sudan, which includes a tent and blockhouse. There is even a do-it-yourself Arab name creator - much like the common name creators used to produce semi-serious monikers for British figures.

Ian Croxall's The Amazing Adventures of the Red Shadow: Colonial Adventure Wargaming in Africa 1888-1914 is a web report on a series of wargame battles set during France's pacification of Morocco, Algeria and the Sahara. In addition, Croxall provides a bibliography and film references.

Caliver Books

Caliver books has a basic sales promise: they will beat the delivered price of any other bookseller on the web. Their Colonial list is fairly long and detailed that it may take you a while to work your way through it! It is neatly divided categories: India Asia, Australia and Americas, Africa, Zulu Campaigns, The Boer Wars and Egypt & the Sudan. There is also a list of 30 odd Colonial wargaming rule sets.
