Chatting with the Fans

It might have been an otherwise quiet news month, but fortunately, the Wallflowers have made an effort to keep in contact with their fans by participating in live chats through its official web site: http://www.wallflowers.com Through these chats, fans have gained access to what the band has been up to, including the fourth album, and other new releases.

One of the most interesting bits of information learned at the live chats came from bassist Greg Richling, who said that the Wallflowers "will remain a 4 piece and hire someone for the touring." In other words, the band has no intention of replacing lead guitarist Michael Ward, who was recently released by the band.

On the topic of the fourth album, lead singer and songwriter Jakob Dylan noted during a live chat that "the new album is more energetic than you may have come accustomed to." That same sentiment was also echoed by Richling. I asked the band who is playing lead guitar on the fourth album. Drummer Mario Calire responded that Dylan is playing lead guitar "and he is kickin ass." The band mentioned that it hasn’t come up with a name for the fourth album, and suggested that fans should post their suggested album titles on the official site’s message board. See the chat transcript at: http://www.wallflowers.com/noflash/chat1... As to the release date of the fourth album, the band said that “the way things are going, we're hoping for June. We're hoping to be on an explosive tour next summer. If not June, maybe September." http://www.wallflowers.com/noflash/qa_co...

When asked about their cover version of the Beatles song “I’m Looking Through You,” Richling said, "We had a great time recording the Beatles track. It was a good match for us.” I asked keyboardist Rami Jaffee if he had changed the Hammond organ part in any way from the original Beatles version. He responded, "I actually stuck with the farfisa type organ sound and added some fun stuff toward the end.” http://www.wallflowers.com/noflash/chat1... (Andy Gershon, president of V2 Records, spoke recently to USA Today about the "I Am Sam" soundtrack, on which the Wallflowers' version of "I'm Looking Through You" appears. He mentioned that the album was made quickly--in only three weeks. “But everyone who saw the movie wanted to contribute. And we were lucky. The Wallflowers were in town when we started looking and recorded a song right there,” he said.) http://www.usatoday.com/usatonline/20011...

The Wallflowers' version of "I'm Looking Through You" is already being played on Spinner Radio and MusicMatch New Release Radio. (Check the movie's official web site http://www.iamsammovie.com/ for details.) An MP3 of the song has also popped up on file sharing programs like Morpheus, and in binary file newsgroups. I’ve heard the song and find it to be a very good cover version. However, I don’t think that Jackson Browne’s background vocals blend with Dylan’s lead vocals all that well. But, of course, it’s hard to match John Lennon’s background vocals on the original version.
