A few days ago, The Wallflowers Network "http://www.the-wallflowers.net" alerted fans to exciting news: The Wallflowers had recorded one of the Beatles songs on the soundtrack to the upcoming movie "I Am Sam." According to Sonicnet.com, the song--"I'm Looking Through You"--was recorded at a Santa Monica studio owned by Jackson Browne, who sings harmony on the track. It'll be released on January 8, 2002 "http://www.sonicnet.com/news/story.jhtml...". The Rami Lounge "http://www.ramijaffee.com/" reported that the song was produced by former Wallflowers guitarist Tobi Miller and his partner Bill Appleberry. It also noted that guitarist Val McCallum plays on the song.
When asked about the Wallflowers' participation on the "I Am Sam"; soundtrack, The Wallflowers' official site "http://www.wallflowers.com" reported that, lead singer Jakob Dylan said, "We were shown a copy of the movie and everyone was knocked out. Songs are used in this movie unlike any other you will see. After having seen it, we would have been happy to have sold popcorn at its showings...A truly special movie that is going to affect a lot of people." Covering a Beatles song can be real challenge. As the Los Angeles Times reported, most of the artists on the "I Am Sam" soundtrack had to rely on a "click track" to record their Beatles covers. The click track ensured "that their tempo would match the tempo of the original songs that had been in the movie." "http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/pri..." The Wallflowers, however, have always lived up to the challenge. Over the years, they've effectively performed in concert various Beatles tunes--such as "Two of Us," "Cry Baby Cry," "Ticket to Ride," and "Don't Let Me Down." For those fans who never heard the Wallflowers perform a Beatles song, "I’m Looking Through You" should be a real treat. For those unfamiliar with the song, here are some vital details about it: "I'm Looking Through You" was written solely by Paul McCartney, even though the song is credited to both John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Asked to explain the song's origin, McCartney explained that it was spurred by an argument with his then-girlfriend, British actress Jane Asher. McCartney said: "I knew I was selfish. It caused a few [arguments]. Jane went off and I said, `OK then, leave. I'll find someone else.' It was shattering to be without her. That was when I wrote `I'm Looking Through You.'" (Source: K. Badman, The Beatles Off the Record). In 1994, McCartney commented that writing "I'm Looking Through You" was a way for him to release his emotions. "In relationships," he noted, "you will from time to time argue or not see eye to eye on things, and a couple of the songs around this period [in the mid-1960's] were that kind of thing . . . I would write it out in a song and then I've gotten rid of the emotion. I don't hold grudges so that gets rid of that little bit of emotional baggage." "http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Fro..."
