The Wallflowers' summer tour is, sadly, drawing to a close. While that means that we won't be seeing the band in person for some time, there are some interesting projects by the band that should hold us over until the next tour begins. Here are some projects on the horizon:
ZOOLANDER SOUNDTRACK: The Wallflowers recorded a song for the soundtrack to the movie Zoolander (the movie stars Ben Stiller "http://www.hollywoodrecords.go.com/zoola...") The track is a remake of the 1968 Bee Gees song I Started A Joke. Dispelling rumors that Jakob Dylan would warble the song much like Robin Gibb, Wallflowers keyboardist, Rami Jaffee, told fans at the Riddles in the Dark Bulletin Board ("http://nightlyre.com/wallflowers/forum/"): "I Started a Joke came out really awesome. Everyone put their stamp on it, Jake [Dylan] sang it great, and I'm sure everyone will dig it. I think it is being mixed right now, so it should be done soon. It was fun and I think our version is really cool, and a lot different than the [Bee Gees]. It is also a little different thing for us sonically, and you'll have to hear it to know what I mean." According to the Wallflowers' official Web site "http://www.wallflowers.com", the Wallflowers' track was produced by Julian Raymond, who had produced some unreleased tracks for the band in early 2000. The Zoolander soundtrack is set to be released on September 25, 2001. Some other remakes on the soundtrack include No Doubt's Love To Love You Baby, Rufus Wainwright's He Ain't Heavy...He's My Brother, and Powerman 5000's Relax. The movie is set to open in theaters on September 28, 2001. GROUNDWORK 2001: Allstar News reported that the Wallflowers, Pearl Jam, R.E.M., Alanis Morissette, and Dave Matthews are some of the acts that agreed to perform for the fundraising event called Groundwork 2001 ("http://www.cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/SID..."). The Wallflowers will play on October 17th (the same days as one of Jakob Dylan's idols, Joe Strummer) at the Experience Music Project's Sky Church in Seattle, WA. According to the organization's Web site ("http://www.groundwork2001.com"), the concerts are intended to "raise money for small farmers to fight hunger and promote self-reliance at the local levels." JOHN DOE CD: According to Rolling Stone.com and John Doe's web site ("http://www.rollingstone.com/news/newsart..." and "http://www.thejohndoething.com/shit.html"), Jakob Dylan will guest on the next album for John Doe, formerly of the Los Angeles band X. RollingStone.com mentions that Doe is "seven songs into his next album" and that Joe Henry is co-producing the album. Besides Jakob Dylan, other guests include Aimee Mann, Beck guitarist Smokey Hormel and R.E.M. drummer Joey Waronker. According to RollingStone.com, Doe describes the album as "more acoustic" than his previous solo albums, and mentions that Doe is "starting to send CDs out to record labels and see who wants to put it out."
