Here are some tips for creating an effective news release:
- Send the release double-spaced, one side only, on a white sheet of paper (use letterhead if you have any)
- Include contact information on the upper right-hand corner incase someone needs clarification or would like to run a longer story.
- Remember to always triple-check your facts.
- Keep your releases down to one or two pages.
- Use the inverted pyramid writing style: Most important things first, details later.
- Remember to include who, what, when, where, and why in the first paragraph.
- Keep paragraphs short.
- Use quotes. Quote yourself, if you wish, but remember to write it in third person.
- Remember to slant your story to include its impact, timeliness, human interest, and proximity.
Good luck!
