What is "Realistic"?

This is a link to a show that took place 'way back in 1996! But I just found out about it. At Lincoln, Nebraska, the University mounted an exhibit of trompe l'oeil paintings. This, in French, means to "fool the eye." These works are so realistic that they pop out from their backgrounds, unlike photos, which usually lie complacently on their flat surfaces. I have never understood the techniques which make this hefty realism possible, but it has been very popular throughout the past couple hundred years. Some artists are even doing it now.

I did not cut a thing, even leaving all the credits. Never know, you might see a friend or acquaintance listed there.
