Garden News and Notes, May-June 2001Spring may or may not have arrived in your garden yet. Despite what the calendar may show I', still hearing reports of snow in some areas. Others are getting chilling rain. Northeastern gardeners are accustomed to complaining about how just when the weather warms up and they can get out and garden the monsoon season moves in. Not this year, however. In my area we had about two rains in almost two months. So gardening season is getting off to a slow start everywhere. That's hard on the gardener but even harder on the places that sell plants. Retail orders have lagged behind the usual rate as customers try to figure out if its safe to buy things to plant yet. As a result, wholesale sales are also lagging. Large companies have suffered losses in excess of $3 million dollars because of our weird weather. Heaven only knows what the effect will be on us, or the offerings at our favorite plant buying places.
