Buying your weeds: Mistakes Beginning Gardeners make Part 7

Understandably, it's not easy to identify a potential garden plant when it's a two inch seedling in the lawn. The Iowa State University's Weed Seedling ID Guide might be helpful here. If you're lucky enough to have areas in the yard where you can let things get a bit wild, you may have the chance to see your "weeds" grow into native plants.

The Grower Center provides another good key to plant and weed identification. If you know the shape of the leaf, you may be able to identify an unknown here.

You may also want to look at Wildflowers in Bloom to see if a seedling that you have identified is a plant you will want to keep. But before you make a commitment, check Wildones on Line to make sure you're not preserving an aggressive native that you will live to regret saving.

Finally, learn a bit about a few of the charming plants that nature may make you gifts of in Hedgemaids and Fairy Candles a book on the lore of native American plants.

Then go spend all that money you saved on something you've been hesitating to splurge on.
