Magnetic Hill

History

As early as the 1800s local farmers noticed their horses had trouble pulling the wagons down hill, but uphill they had to run fast or the wagon would catch up to them. However, they didn't think too much about it at that time. I wasn't until 1933 when Muriel Lutes opened a canteen at the top of the road that msny people began to come to visit the phenomenon. Murial noticed that the cars were moving up the road on their own. More and more tourists arrived giving the hill names such as, Fool Hill, Mystery Hill and Magic Hill. Then one day a truck driver who had come to see the magic, mused " It must be magnetic." This name stuck, Magnetic Hill it was.

Many stories were told about the hill, and the news began to spread. Then the Saint John telegraph Journal wrote about the miraculous hill. Two of it's reporters had seen the phenomenon. They had tried to figure out the mystery and concluded it was a quirk of nature. Later a bypass was built around the hill and it became a permanent tourist attraction. It is now a very well known site. People come from all around the world to try and figure out the mystery.

The Mystery

Well we are finally here on the outskirts of Moncton, at Magnetic Hill. It is a lot smaller than I imagined and appears in pictures. So, I pay and we drive to the bottom of the small hill. I put the car in neutral and "lo and behold," The car is definitely moviing, uphill. It is a very odd feeling. We also watch this phenomenon for a while, as other cars and even a tour bus moves from one point to another. We then park and head over to the wharf mall to check out the shops. The mall along with a family theme park and zoo is adjacent to the hill. Then while walking on the wharf we see this sign. ( see below)
