Awesome New Brunswick: Millennium Series 31

Campbellton

The accommodations are comfortable but mundane. However, the hospitality is awesome. We are greeted by the manager and welcomed as if guests in her home. She and her assistant help up with our bags and both absolutely refuse any tip. Our room has a nice view of the Restigouche River and the bridge that leads to Gaspe. The first night we eat in the pub-like dining room. It is a busy place, with TV, music, a lively crowd and pub type food. In the morning we find that breakfast here is very good.

Next to the motel, we discover an excellent tourist bureau, a park, and Salmon Square, where we meet Restigouche Sam. Restigouche Sam is a huge sculpture of a jumping Atlantic salmon. He is caught mid jump in a large pool of green water. He is so realistic in appearance, one who uses imagination, can envision him as the really, big one that got away. Sam is an awesome sight, especially lit up by the light of the sunset.

Campbellton is a comfortable little town, with friendly people and many amenities including the Resigouche gallery and a shopping mall, where we do a little shopping. Irene Doyle, a distant relative and friend, who has helped me with my geneological pursuits, joins us for lunch. It was great meeting her at last. I have found that blood, no matter how distant, breaks down the barrier between would-be strangers.

On the advice of the motel manager we have dinner in a lovely little restaurant called "Something Special." It truly lives up to its name. It has a nice ambiance, atmosphere world class food and service. This is not what we expected in such a small town.

The incredible sunset we view on leaving the restaurant is also a surprise. The spectacular colour deepens reflecting on the river, the bridge and a huge mud puddle in the parking lot. We quickly return to the motel and get our cameras. It is a glorious ending to the first day of our New Brunswick experience.
