London favorite Places Pt 2

There are over 300 museums and galleries in London, making it tops in culture and collections. From the British Museum, the oldest open to the public, to the new Tate gallery of Art opened last year and with collections consisting of manuscripts to transport vehicles,London has the most varied collections in the world. ,

Favorite Galleries

Tate Modern

Britain's latest national gallery museum is the Tate modern with three levels of galleries. It is located in a refurbished Bank-side Power Station, which supplied power to London 50 years ago. The immense turbine hall is a perfect space to exhibit, art. The Tate Modern features art from 1900 till present day. This includes paintings by Matisse, Damien Hirst, Salvadore Dali, Andy Warhol, Gilbert and George. to name just a few. There are sculptures by Henry Moore and Dali's famous lobster telephone. Dali is also featured in the Country Hall .

There are shops, cafes and an excellent restaurant with a two-story glass roof and a superb view of the city and the river. The good news is that admission is free. However, donations are accepted for gallery expenses. The Tate Modern is located on the south bank of the Thames, opposite St. Paul's and next to the Globe Theatre. It is definitely worth a visit.

Tate Britain

Founded by Sir Henry Tate in 1897, the Tate Britain showcases British artists. There are now three Tate galleries in the UK. Tate Britain houses the greatest collection of British art from 1500 till now. It features works by Blake, Hockney, Rossetti, and Turner among others. It also has Rodin's " The Kiss." The Tate Britain also has a painting entitled " The Bradshaw Family", which we have reason to believe is the family of Peter and Barrie's ancestor, John Bradshaw. He was the judge who signed the death warrant for Charles 1.

The National Gallery

Established by Parliament in 1824 the National Gallery has an incredible collection from 1260-1900. It features works by Constable, Monet, Van Gogh, Rembrant and Botticelli. The well known, "Hay Wain", by Constable, Holbein's " The Ambassadors," and "Arnolfini's, Marriage." by Van Eyck are featured attractions. Besides an interesting gift shop, there is also an excellent restaurant, Crivelli's Garden. The National Gallery is another attraction that has free admission.

Favorite Churches

Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is one of the most historic churches. Since it's inception in the 11th century,it has been the scene of Royal marriages, funerals, burials and coronations.
