Rome on a Budget© Joanne Johansson
As I unexpectedly ended up in surgery to repair a broken ankle. my latest article on Rome is not available. However, I was lucky enough to receive this information from my cousin and she agreed to be a guest editor. I hope you will welcome Joanne Johansson. Her article is very informative and interesting for anyone planning a trip to Rome. It could also save you a lot of money.
Rome on a Budget Here are some excellent but very inexpensive accommodations. Also places to see while visiting Rome, that are free or very inexpensive. Regarding the information on convents. Our favorite one was "Domus Aurelia". Located on Via Aurelia, just 5-10 minutes from St Peter's square by bus # 46 or # 49. Or any taxi can take you there. You can walk too. It's about 1/2 hr walk up a beautiful area of Residences and Parks to Via Aurelia. You don't have to know anyone to stay there. Just call and make a reservation. The Ursuline Order of nuns runs it. They live on the 2nd floor and all the other floors are above and are rented out for revenue. Nice single or double rooms with 5 piece ensuites. (toilet, tub, shower, bidet and sink) Rooms are cleaned and linen changed daily. It is sparse but totally adequate for the price. (60.00 per night) Each room has it's own patio with a nice city view. Payment in Italian currency or Visa, Master Card. Reservations by phone,06 218 00165 e-mail or post. Via Aurelia #218, Rome, Italy Another great convent is" Domus Maria" It is about a 20 minute drive away. It is run by another order of Nuns and is situated right next door to a most beautiful park. The price is a slightly higher price, $75.00 a night, but is closer to city center. Via Aurelia 481,Rome, Italy 06 660 00576 Things to see that are open to public and are free, besides the usual Vatican, Coliseum, ruins, St Peters: Villa Borghese- huge park with long avenues of trees with picturesque little villas, which double as museums and galleries, dotted throughout. Villa Ada - Open dawn to sunset. Bus # 38 to Piazza Istria. Villa Torionia - a beautiful Villa and garden, once Mussolini's family residence, that fell into disrepair, but has since been renovated. The garden contains many exotic plants and large beautiful trees. Bus 36 Villa Aldobrandini-a small serene villa and raised garden with a great view.
