Arles, Ste Maries de la Mer and the Camargue Pt 9

the Virgin was built on landing and while the others wandered to other places, Marie Jacobe, Marie Salome and Sarah remained. They were buried in the oratory and their tomb became an attraction for pilgrimages. Later they were reburied and enshrined. A small boat shaped pastry called a Navette commemorates this tale.

**During the Roman period the name was changed to Colonia Sextanorum and eventually Arles.

My friend Harry Beattie wrote to add another place to visit. It is Aigues Mortes. It's a walled city, now mostly a tourist place, but with a charming small hotel - the St. Louis - but the special feature of the hotel on our few visits is its courtyard restaurant. St. Louis embarked from here on his Crusade in the1300's (I think that's correct - we don't have any research tools here.) HB
