vultures. Marsh and seabirds also abound in this wonderful place. There are geese, swans, egrets, storks, herons, ducks and the Camargue pink flamingoes. This is a great place to visit.

There is also a reception area with displays of the ecology of the region as well as The Camargue Museum where there is a historical presentation from 7,000 years ago till today.

Sainte Maries de la Mer

As we drive into Ste. Maries we see the traditional thatched houses used by the Camargue Gardians or cowboys. Each has a cross on the roof. These cowboys ride the small white horses and round up the local bulls.

Ste. Maries de la Mer is situated where the Petit Rhone joins the sea. Looking very much like a modern California seaside town, with whitewash and orange tile roofs, Ste. Maries is a tourist town with many shops and amenities. Long beaches and a spectacular view of the open sea front the town.

Although this is a yearlong resort town it is warmest and busiest in the summer. Off-season offers solitude and empty beaches. All Saints weekend and the many festivals and pilgrimages to the saints are a special time to visit. In May there is the exciting, gathering of Gypsies, who honor St Sarah. There is dancing and music and a festive air. The gitans (gypsies) camp on the beach.

There is a bullring in the town, where the Camargue black bulls fight, but as is the French tradition, are not killed. Ribbons are tied to their horns and cut by the riders, to show their skills. It is tradition that men, bulls and horses live in harmony.

However, steak and beef stew, called "Gardiane de Taureau a l' Ancienne, are some of the culinary offerings here. Fish and shellfish are also specialties including " Terrines a la Provencale" featuring a tiny clam-like shellfish. Good Paella is also a served here.

Legend of St. Maries de la Mer

There is also a legend about how St Marie came to be. It is a story of a ship without sail oars, or food that was launched and drifted from Jerusalem to these shores. Aboard were many saints and holy passengers, including Mary Jacobe, mother of James and sister of the Virgin, Mary Salome mother of 2 apostles, Lazarus and his two sisters, Mary Magdalene and Martha, St Maximus, Cedonius and Sarah, servant of the two Marys
