I am a mother of three and I home school as well, so I eagerly looked
around for things to do to stay busy at home and even try to earn an
income! I have always loved to garden as a child and so it was perfectly
natural to toil in the gardens.
I live and garden in the slug infested town of Bremerton, Washington. We have lived at this house for over 15 years and I never touched the yards until about 6 years ago. Then as normal, I tore into them, literally... I started to dig up the lawns every where I went. Soon there wasn't much left of the lawns, and I never could figure out why my husband would complain, because it was all the less he had to mow. My first impulses were eclectic and I started to cram plants everywhere. Now I have matured (yeah, sure right!) and have tried to make some sense to it all and get some type of order and discipline to the gardens. But mostly I let it just go where it wants to and it seeds everywhere. One part of my business is dried flowers so I plant them not only in the back garden but all through out the flower beds. Another part is the willow furniture, which just seems to go with it all. And yet another part is plants themselves. I start growing little seeds in January and they are ready for 'market day' come the first of May plus I take clumps from all my plants as well. The Farmers Market in Port Orchard, Washington is a wonderful outlet for gardeners to earn some cash. I also make willow furniture. which is a great way to enjoy the garden.I can't remember what sparked my interest in it, nor where I got the first idea to even try to create some, but somehow I started making willow furniture! I couldn't find any instructions on making chairs so I would buy every magazine that I could find that would have a picture of a chair until I could see every angle. I grew up working with 'power tools' and making things so it seemed natural to try. Once I perfected the chair (through many trials and errors) then I found a great book on 'how to'. I now sell them at the Farmers Market, too and at a few, select art and craft shows. Selling via the internet has it's problems, namely shipping! But anything is possible!
