I have a small garden in Dublin, Ireland . When I say small, the back garden
measures
about 30ft square and it is here that most of the action takes place. It is
hard to imagine
how change can take place every year in such a small area but it does...I am
always
happy with it but never satisfied , and I am glad about that.
The walls and fences are covered with Clematis, Roses and an assortment of Ivies so the latter prevent a bare look in Winter. I have a lovely pond with a rock garden around it but as the heron came and ate the fish this autumn I built another raised pond on my patio, a location which should be more heron resistant. The reflection in the ponds adds a feeling of space to my garden as does a large mirror attached to a wall. My very favourite plants are Hardy geraniums or Cranesbills and I have collected over fifty different varieties. These are wonderful plants with one or other suiting every location from shade to full sun. Their foliage too can be most attractive in the autumn. Clematis are also high on my list of pet plants and can be fitted in as I dont accept that they should always be grown *up* and like to see some varieties wandering through borders. I like to do what work I can , like making gravel beds, paths, troughs etc myself and try to call for help only with really heavy work.I also feel quite strongly that when I write or talk about a plant I should have first hand knowledge of it. My garden has been the scene of many a mistake some live to tell the tell while others have been put right; however the next mistake is only around the corner and thats what makes it all so much fun.
