The Lark AscendingBefore the piece ends, the first theme is repeated again. Played by the solo violin, this is to mark the 'lark' finally taking one last peep, and ascends to the higher, wider, bluer sky. The entire piece never fails to portray the distinguished charm of English landscape, and it is no wonder why this piece is widely considered to be as 'perfect' as it could get. The Lark Ascending is slowly gaining popularity amongst violinists these days. It is no fiddler's favourite, but the emotional depth and strength are enough for a recording to be made. Amongst the recordings available, Hugh Bean, with Sir Adrian Boult conducting, boldly recorded the piece with such startling details that every stroke of the bow seems to make the notes alive. Sarah Chang, on the other hand, along with Bernard Haitink conducting, provides another fine alternative, although the tempi might be slightly faster. If there is a piece that calms down the heart and melts it, this must be the one.
