Older books: Past sources worth another look

© Dan Cooper

There is a wealth of published material on the subject of collector cars, much of which is unavailable today from most book vendors. These increasingly scarce books include many very fine editions that were published before the days of the book publishing industry's now common ISBN numbers.

This article, and those that will follow under a similar title, will present a listing of some of these fine works. A diligent aficionado might still be able to find these books in used book stores, flea markets, estate sales, and other places that remain within, but somehow slightly off the beaten path in the publishing industry.

These titles are offered here for reference. In your search for older books not readily available through many of the larger book vendors, you may wish to consult some of the sources I have listed at the end of this article. While I recommend searching a vendor like Amazon.com before resorting to some of the smaller, more specialized vendors, you may have no choice but to opt for these specialty vendors in cases where the book in question is very rare. Periodically, we will be updating this listing with additional titles, through the addition of new articles under titles such as, "Older Books: Update 07-03-04," for example.

These titles are presented in no particular order, and will be described briefly when appropriate. Some titles are members of my personal collection, so I will attempt to describe these in slightly greater detail.

As the publishing world moves slowly away from the print medium and into the electronic information world, older books such as are the subject of this article will be all the more treasured. They are information and entertainment sources that are in some cases unequalled.

It should be noted that there is at this point no means available to post these older books on this site in the usual place, under "My Recommended Books." The reason for this is twofold. First, many of them are unavailable through the preferred vendors, such as Amazon.com. And second, these books include many that are old enough to be published prior to the accepted practice of using the ISBN numbers in common use today. A book having no ISBN cannot even be listed at this time under "My Preferred Books." So even if the book became available, we would have to modify the system for citing it before being able to list it.
