Once upon a time there was a very beautiful young woman by the name of My Nuong. .She is the well cherished daughter of a rich and powerful lord . Like most young women of a high social class, she was always kept in her palace, painting landscape , writing poetry, doing embroidery, waiting for an appropriate high ranking and rich suitor.

Not very far from the palace lived a fisherman who earned his living by casting his net along the river. On a bad day, when he was unable to catch any fish , he would sing melancholic songs to distract himself. Young My Nuong would look out the window and was attracted by this voice coming up from the river. Day after day, she became totally captivated by this melody and was unable to do anything else, except waiting for him to come and sing at her window.

One day, the voice was quiet. She waited for days but there was only silence. Its silence made her restless, she could not eat or sleep and became bed ridden. No doctors could determine the case of her illness . To restore the smile on her face, everything was tried but nothing worked. My Nuong remained lethargic until one beautiful morning, as the voice rose again , the young woman was so overcome with joy that she regained her forces. This, however did not escape the scrutinizing eyes of her father, He began to understand the cause of his daughter's problems. So the second time, when My Nuong plunged into despair because she did not hear the voice, her father looked for the fisherman and brought him to his sick daughter.

This fisherman, named Truong Chi, looked very ugly and My Nuong was frightened . Faced with this reality, My Nuong became disillusioned and was no longer charmed by the voice and gradually, lost all interest in the melody and went back to her normal life.

However the poor fisherman, whose name was Truong Chi.fell in love with My Nuong the day he was brought into the palace and saw her.

He became very sad restless, as he knew his love was a desperate one.

He gradually fell ill, died of grief and was buried at the river bank, next to a tree. His grief crystallized into a jade ball. It was a beautiful jade ball of such beauty and splendor.

The people in the village believed that was the body of the fisherman.

My Nuong's father was attracted by such a rare gem, bought the jade ball and made it into a cup for his daughter, as a birthday gift.
