Vietnam is in Southeastern Asia, with a coastline of 3,444 km, from the Gulf of Thailand, the Gulf of Tonkin, to the South China Sea. In the West and Southwest are three thousand kilometers of land borders; In the North, it is separated from China by more than a thousand kilometers (1,281 km), in the West, from Laos by a thousand five hundred kilometers (1,555 km) in the SouthWest from Cambodia by almost a thousand kilometers (982 km) It has a total surface area of 329,560 sq km (which is slightly larger than New Mexico).

Vietnam is a primarily agricultural country with a quarter of arable land (22% to 25%), of which permanent crops occupy more than 2%, meadows and pastures 1% and irrigated land covers an area of 18,300 sq km. The remaining is of forest and woodland The country still struggles with environmental problems such as soil degradation; water pollution and overfishing.

According to the July 1995 est. Vietnam counts a population of 74,393,324 with a growth rate of 1.71%, a birth rate of 26.25 births/1,000 population and a death rate of: 7.6 deaths/1,000 population Life expectancy at birth for the total population is 65.72 years (male: 63.66 years ) (female: 67.91 years )

Vietnam is composed of different ethnic divisions : Vietnamese constitute 85% to 90% of the total number. The remaining is Chinese and Indians with 3% to 5%, the Montagnards such as the Muong, Thai, Meo, Khmer, Man, Cham constitute the rest. Different religions are practiced in Vietnam: There are the Buddhist, Confucianist, Taoist, Roman Catholic, and some other indigenous beliefs, Islam, Protestant.

The official language is Vietnamese but others can also be heard such as French, Chinese, English, Khmer, tribal languages (Mon-Khmer and Malayo-Polynesian).

Vietnam 's work force lists about 32.7 million, amongst the different occupations 65% are in agricultural and 35% in industrial and service areas (1990 est.) Some other large cities are Saigon (now known as Ho Chi Minh City) in the South and Hue( in the Center) and Hai Phong (in the North).
