William Morristo come, a symbol of middle class materialism and complacency. The American social realist, Sinclair Lewis, repeatedly used the Morris chair in his novels to symbolise provincial pretentiousness and conformity. The next article will explore some of the objects designed by William Morris and Morris & Co. Works cited: Linda Parry, ed. William Morris, Philip Wilson Publishers, London, 1997.
