For the past few weeks we've been taking an in-depth look at the individual components of a vegetarian diet. For a change of pace, this week we are going out to dinner! Some people think that vegetarians cannot eat in restaurants and steak houses. While not the easiest meal to be had, a dinner out vegetarian-style is not an impossibility.

If you need to eat on the run, but do not eat meat, your choices are severely limited. A national Mexican fast-food chain used to serve an excellent vegetarian fajita; however, I have not seen it on the menu for several months. At any of the top ten hamburger-based fast-food chains, there are a few paltry offerings for a non-carnivore. At these restaurants, you can expect to buy a wilted salad, baked potato, or you can ask for the bun and sauce without the hamburger (expect to pay full price even without the meat).

Last night my husband and I went to dinner at a Mexican restaurant. While the usual fare at this establishment is steaks or beef tacos, I was certain there would be a vegetarian meal available. I was correct; there was one vegetarian meal on the menu. At first, I attempted to order my favorite, cheese enchiladas, but the menu noted they were covered in meat sauce. I suppose I could have asked for the sauce to be omitted, but I have to admit that I am a timid person who hates to ask for entrees on the menu changed. I have friends who will ask for their meal substituted, reheated, without sauce, or on a purple plate while I can barely let the waiter know if I need more water.

Back at the Mexican restaurant, the only truly meatless dish on the menu was vegetable fajitas. Being the shy person that I am, I don't like the attention that a griddle full of sizzling and steaming fajitas can attract. I wish they would finish cooking those things in the kitchen! I finally put my husband up to asking for sauceless enchiladas. The waiter was more than happy to comply.

My entrée was served with flavored rice and refried beans. While the main ingredients, rice and beans, are obviously vegetarian favorites, if you are a strict vegetarian you should inquire about the preparation of these dishes. I was informed at one restaurant that the rice was cooked in chicken stock and the beans fried in lard. Depending on the strictness of your lifestyle you may or may not choose to eat these side dishes. Black beans are often available in place of refried beans and are usually prepared without any meat ingredients.
