I've been suffering from a really terrible head cold for the last couple of days, but I've had so many appointments to keep and so much work to do that I really haven't had a chance to laze around and just rest--like you're supposed to do when you have a really terrible head cold.
Last night I figured enough was enough, so on my way home from an appointment I stopped in the video store and grabbed a couple of movies. I went home, made tea and settled down in front of the TV.
One of the movies I rented was Innocent Blood,a film I've wanted to see for a while now. John Landis directed it, and John Landis was once my hero because I simply LOVED An American Werewolf in London.It is my favourite werewolf movie and one of my top five horror movies. It's scary when it's supposed to be scary, funny when it's supposed to be funny and gory as hell--with wonderful makeup (done by Rick Baker).
So I watched Innocent Blood,and though it's no American Werewolf,it is a pretty good vampire flick.
Anne Parillaud (The Man in the Iron Mask, La Femme Nikita)is a French vampire in America (yes, Landis likes his monsters to be global). She doesn't enjoy taking the blood of innocents; she prefers her victims to be those who the world really wouldn't miss if they weren't around any more. So she focuses her attention on the local mob scene. It's as good a place as any to feed. Mobsters are criminals and, besides, with all the hits going on, she's unlikely to arouse any suspicion.
The famigliathat Marie sets her sights upon is headed by boss Sal, The Shark, Macelli (Robert Loggia of Prizzi's Honorand Scarface),and also includes Tony (Chazz Palminteri of The Usual Supsectsand Bullets Over Broadway).Joe Gennaro (played by Anthony LaPaglia of the TV shows "Murder One" and "Friends"--as Daphne's brother Simon) is an undercover cop who has been trying to get evidence on The Shark for several years by gaining the group's trust and becoming one of them.
So Marie seduces one of the mobsters and succeeds in feeding on him, then shooting him in the head to cover up the evidence and make it look like a hit. But the coroner is suspicious. This dead guy is about 5 quarts low on blood.
Marie's next conquest is The Shark himself. She's a powerful vampire, so she's not really concerned about getting hurt. But during the seduction, food comes into play, and she has not considered a primary element of Italian cuisine.
