Willie Meikle - The Book of the Dark

William (Willie) Meikle is a 40 year old Scottish horror writer, who earns his money as a technical writer. Somehow I can image a technical writer also being a horror writer or maybe I can't. THE BOOK OF THE DARK is Willie's first book and was published by Great Unpublished. He has two more books published all in print. THE JOHNSON AMULET AND OTHER SCOTTISH TERRORS is a short story collection of 28 horror stories. ISLAND LIFE is about a small, sparsely populated island in the Scottish Outer Hebrides. When a group of archeology students open what seems to be an early Neolithic burial mound, they release something, something large, hulking, with a taste for human flesh. THE WATCHERS OF THE WALL, BOOK 1 OF '45. The start of a series of vampire books based in an alternate history universe.

Willie is a prolific short story writer with over 150 short stories published. Check out his web site for links to some of those stories. He is also the editor of Moonlicht Nicht The eZine of Supernatural Scotland.

INTERVIEW

According to your website, you took two years out as a technical author to write two books. Are you going back to work as a technical author?
Actually I'll always go back to being a technical writer.....it pays a whole lot more than a short story does. The main thing tech writing teaches you is discipline to keep writing. You can't stop because you're not in the mood, or take three weeks over a couple of sentences. It's "I need a 3000 word report on the state of the IT systems in my company on my desk in the morning." If it's not done, I don't get paid, and if I don't get paid I don't eat. It focuses the mind wonderfully. The downside is that there is only limited scope for creativity.

Am I correct that "THE BOOK OF THE DARK" is your only eBook? Do you consider yourself an Internet author? And what do you think of ebooks... are they the future of publishing?
Actually TBOTD is also available in Print On Demand, and my story collection "The Johnson Amulet and other Scottish Terrors" was available as an eBook for a while before it went to POD. I've also published a lot of short stories both in print and in online markets and a novel by the traditional method. I'm also considering dipping my toe in the audio book market. I see myself as a writer, whatever the medium, and that means I'm an Internet writer
