John Masterson - A Scarlet Peccadillo

where the mother is fixated on Elvis, worshiping him as though he is God, and the daughter is visited by Elvis' ghost who chooses her as his own special bride. I kept expecting to meet a vampire, so wondered if Elvis was a vampire making Lulu believe he was Elvis for his own purposes. But no, he isn't a vampire, at least I don't think he is, but the question is never really answered if he was Elvis' ghost or merely a figment of Lulu's imagination.

Scarlet Peccadillo follows Lulu as she grows up, goes off to college, and tries to deal with her own peculiarities, including her growing craving for blood which eventually leads to murder. Along the way she attracts a series of strange boyfriends, including Johnny, who goes to jail for murder, Mort the Mortician, David the Philander, and Diesel, an ex-con who gets her pregnant and then makes the mistake of running out on her and the baby.

There is a good deal of graphic and rather kinky sex. As a reader of erotica, I found Masterson's descriptions imaginative and of a higher caliber than usual, but still there was the occasional feeling of gratuitous sex.

If you are looking for vampires, you won't find them. No, this is a story about an all too real obsession with blood and with the slow descent into madness that leads someone to become a vampire in truth, a killer and a drinker of blood. What is even more frightening is that this creature hides behind the mask of normality as a kindergarten teacher.

I found Scarlet Peccadillo a difficult book to read, because the subject was intensely disturbing. I was also bothered by the poor editing job and the many misspelled words but found it generally well written, although it lacks a strong plot or story line. It is more of a biography or a diary and sort of just ends without really solving anything.

Would I recommend Scarlet Peccadillo? I'm not sure. It would certainly appeal to some readers, those who enjoy the off-the-wall, rather raw, hard edged book. Demented was the first word I could think of to describe not only the character but the book. Scarlet Peccadillo is a truly wild ride into the depths of one individual's insanity.
