The fun begins as everyone tries to help Stella cope with her new existence while keeping it a secret from her son. How do you put on mascara when you can't see yourself in a mirror? And how long will an intelligent eight-year-old believe you are on a diet, when you no longer eat dinner with him?
Of course sparks fly when Justin tries to protect and cosset his fledgling in a typically old fashioned macho male way, but Stella won't be ordered about. It takes awhile for Justin to accept that she is her own woman.
Matters turn complicated when Justin's arch rival, Vlad Tepes a.k.a Dracula, appears with two female ghouls in tow asking for a favor and a tribunal is called to judge Justin for breaking the laws of the colony by injuring the two humans that attacked him and Stella. It looks like Justin and Stella will be separated just as they have found one another, but Stella and Dixie are not about to stand by meekly and let that happen.
Rosemary Laurey's vampires are anything but dark and evil. Even the arch villain, Dracula, turns out to be a good guy. They live by a high code of ethics, never killing or harming humans, although they aren't above playing with humans in the cause of justice as Kit and Justin foil thieves and take out a crack house in Stella's neighborhood.
There is always something interesting happening in this fast paced book filled with interesting characters. I look forward to meeting them again, when Mystery in Moonlight is published in 2002, for it is obvious that Justin and Kit's friend Tom has fallen for one of the ghouls, Angela.
