Vampire Poetry Part 1

Valerie Hardin, whom I profiled last column, first contacted me to ask if I reviewed poetry books. I told her I hadn't, but thought it would be a good idea to write a column devoted to vampire poetry. Then a fellow list mate, Lewis Sanders, proudly announced his new eBook. Blood Dreaming: A Collection of Gothic Ku Available from The Writer's Garret http://www.the-writers-garret.com/bloodd...

So I decided it was finally time to write that column about vampire poetry. Little did I know. You see, I don't write poetry. I usually don't even read poetry, because too often, I don't understand it. Frankly, I tend to classify poets among those rare literary creatures, with whom I have little in common. So to start writing this column I went to Google.com and typed in vampire poetry. Big mistake. Talk about overwhelming. I had seen vampire poetry on other sites, I just didn't realize how extensive it is. If you enjoy poetry, especially dark poetry, gothic poetry, poetry about vampires and other creatures of the night, there is more than enough to feast upon.

To start there are the classic Vampire poems.

Der Vampir by Heinrich August Ossenfelder is credited with being the first vampire poem. http://www.niteworld.net/derdampir.shtml
The Bride of Corinth by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was written in 1797. http://www.niteworld.net/bride.shtml
John Stagg's English poem, The Vampire, written in 1810, was the first poem dedicated to the vampire. http://www.niteworld.net/stagg.shtml
And Lord Bryon's The Giaour is famous. http://www.niteworld.net/giaour.shtml

St. Louis After Dark is a real vampire zine based in the St. Louis Metropolitan and Bi-State area. In addition to vampire related articles, a newsletter, message boards, chat rooms, its members are encourage to contribute poetry, short stories and artwork. The Dark Poetry page has classical poems as well as contemporary poems. http://www.slad.net/poetry.html

One of the best vampire resources is still Pathway to Darkness. It has a large selection of stories and poems. http://www.pathwaytodarkness.com/ficarch...

Then I discovered The Dark Side of the Net. This site run by Carol Carolin has over 10,250 hand picked links. http://www.darklinks.com/index.html This is an absolutely awesome resource, with pages and pages of links. Unbelievable. Her poetry page gives you links to more poetry than you could every want to read. http://www.darklinks.com/dpoetry.html

In honor of the occasion I decided to try my hand at writing some poetry.
