Second, it's not really about vampires, but mythological creatures called Vectors. The
Gift of Blood is a fantasy novel, by an author who has written almost 30 fantasy novels.
In this world, the Vectors are a race of creatures who are extremely handsome in form,
capable of all kinds of magic, including changing into any number of beasts and birds
and shrouding themselves in illusion to disguise themselves, a necessary trait since
they exist on blood and are greatly feared and hated by the superstitious peasant
population. Jaeger is a halfling, whose Vector father loved his human mother and ran
away with her. When Jaeger was still young, they were discovered by the Vectors, his
mother killed and his father banished. Jaeger was raised in the Vector stronghold, but
never truly accepted. He has kept his promise to his mother and never drank human
blood, until he meets a spoiled brat of a boy on the road and is driven by a strange
compulsion to taste his blood. Filled with guilt and remorse, he learns that it is only the
beginning. He is becoming a mature Vector and will need human blood.
A boyhood enemy, Celd, comes hunting a bleeder, someone whose body produces extra blood and who can be frequently bled by the Vectors. Celd plans to make her his mate in a strange mating ritual by which the leader of the Vectors mates with a Vector woman, and then plants the seed or embryo in a Chosen, who in turns impregnates a human female who carries the child and then dies becoming its first source of blood. The bleeder that Celd claims is Rhiannon, whom Jaeger found bleeding to death and saved. Rhiannon turns out to be a witch, who is a different kind of bleeder. When she uses her magic, her blood creates extra iron which poisons her unless she is bled. Jaeger falls in love with Rhiannon and she with him. He vows to keep her from being used by the cruel Celd and they flee together. Persecuted by superstitious peasants who fear witches as much as they do Vectors, chased by Celd and the other Vectors, Jaeger and Rhiannon struggle to escape. Hiding in a cave, they are discovered by Darius, the Vector who raised Jaeger after his parents were killed. Darius has been sent to punish Jaeger and return Rhiannon to Celd. Darius imprisons Jaeger in the form of a large cat, condemning him to be a cat by day and a Vector by night. This does not stop Jaeger from trying to find
