sister. We will be treated to at least three more in the series, Sins of
The Flesh, publication May 2001, Temptation, publication winter 2001,
and Eye of the Storm, publication 2002. As with some other romance
writers, she has created a series with ongoing characters that we grow
to like, with each book
focusing on a different set of lovers. These books are meant to be read
in sequence.
In the Shadow Dwellers universe, there are the vampires, blood suckers with powers of illusion and telepathy, who, with age, can even brave the sunlight. Then there are the revenants, made by the vampires, but not vampires, who are human, eat normal food, live normal lives, only they are immortal like a vampire. While they can be killed, it is very hard. There are also were-cats -- witches -- ancient Druid priests -- a vampire council that controls everything. A whole mishmash of different ideas with little explanation of the how. Since one of the things that fascinates me about vampire literature is the different sets of rules that govern vampires, I found myself a bit frustrated. For example, the revenants -- I couldn't find an explanation of how one becomes a revenant instead of a vampire. While J. C. Wilder may have a very definite set of rules worked out, she didn't share them with the reader in the two books I read. That said, I still plan to read the whole series. She's got me hooked. Update: When J.C. Wilders original publisher, Dreams Unlimited, went out of business, she found a new home at LTD Books. http://www.LTDbooks.com Her books are now available from LTD Books in both eBook and trade paper back.
