It's always a pleasure to see a good writer become even a better one. I read and reviewed Margaret L. Carter's first book, DARK CHANGELING, as well as her other books, NIGHTFLIGHT, CRIMSON DREAMS, and SEALED IN BLOOD. So when I picked up CHILD OF TWILIGHT, I was expecting a good read and I definitely wasn't disappointed. In fact, I was very impressed and in some ways surprised. Unlike other writers who seem to repeat the same story over and over with just different names, each one of Margaret's book is a different story and yet they are about the same creatures. She continues to explore and expand her vampire universe. Again unlike many authors who evolve complex histories for their vampires, following them through the centuries, Margaret has focused on exploring their extraordinary nature. I've said it before, her vampires are some of the best thought out, most interesting, and most unique of the species.

In CHILD OF TWILIGHT, she follows Gillian, a young halfbreed going through the pangs of adolescence. Human teens think they have it rough, but it's nothing compared to what a vampire teen goes through. Margaret has managed to create a character that we definitely can relate to, but who is totally alien. Gillian runs away from her overly strict guardian and turns up on her father Roger Duvaul's doorstep. Roger, the hero of DARK CHANGELING, is a halfbreed himself, who was raised by humans and didn't learn until he as an adult about his vampire heritage.

Anyway, in vampire society, the males are nothing more than sperm donors, mothers have little to do with a child after weaning, and they are raised by mentors. Roger hasn't seen Gillian since she was three and isn't quite sure how he feels about her when she appears. Roger's warm hearted human mate, Britt, knows what to do, take the child in out of the cold. Eloise agrees. Claude is Roger's brother, a full vampire, and a famous actor. Eloise is his human mate. The couple are visiting with exciting news. Eloise is pregnant. Before Roger can untangle the Gillian situation, hopefully convincing her to go back to her mentor, Eloise miscarries. Then, Gillian is kidnaped by a human professor out to expose her secret and Claude is shot.
