It seems hard to imagine a more unlikely combination that a good Native American / Southwestern mystery and vampires, but David and Aimée have successfully combined the two. SECOND SUNRISE and its sequel, BLOOD RETRIBUTION, are about a Navajo policeman, Lee Nez. Lee Nez was turned by a Nazi vampire during World War II, but sought help of a Navajo medicine man. As a result, he is a daywalker, able to tolerate a certain amount of sun, with the help of lots of sunblock. Also playing a prominent part in these stories are skinwalkers, evil Navajo witches capable of shapeshifting. It seems that the very smell of Lee's vampire blood is like catnip to the skinwalkers.
Both books are excellent police procedural mysteries. The vampire element is well thought out and convincing, with some touches that I haven't come across before. I especially loved Elka's revenge in BLOOD RETRIBUTION, but I can't say another word, because I don't want to spoil it, but I thought the idea exceptionally clever. In addition to the Lee Nez series, David and Aimée Thurlo have written a very successful series of Southwestern mysteries. Ella Clah is an ex-FBI agent now working for the Navajo tribal police and the stories take place on the Navajo reservation. Their work is often compared to best selling author Tony Hillerman, although their Ella Clah series has a touch more of the paranormal. This series includes BLACKENING SONG, DEATH WALKER, BAD MEDICINE, ENEMY WAY, SHOOTING CHANT, RED MESA, CHANGING WOMAN, TRACKING BEAR, and WIND SPIRIT. The newest in the series, WHITE THUNDER, was just released in April. In addition, there is a stand alone novel, PLANT THEM DEEP, featuring Ella Clah's mother, Rose. You can find my reviews of this excellent series at MidnightBlood.com http://www.midnightblood.com/AuthorsT.ht... In addition to the Ella Clah series, they have another mystery series, Sister Agatha, about a nun in a Southwestern convent. Under her own name and pseudonyms, Aimée has written almost 20 Harlequin Intrigue novels, most set in the Southwest. You can find out more about David and Aimée at their homepage http://www.aimeeanddavidthurlo.com/ INTERVIEW QUESTIONS The scenario of Nazi vampire spies trying to steal plutonium during World War II is certainly unique. There must be a story about how that came about? David is a history buff. New Mexico was the site of the first atomic bomb explosion and all the final planning and weapon construction that led to that event. All the Germans needed to make their own bomb was fissionable materials--their heavy water production having failed to produce what was needed. So, to us, NM was the place they'd have to visit if they hoped to save their own country with the ultimate weapon. David's father worked at the Fort Wingate arsenal during WWII, and most bombs and heavy explosives coming through the state, especially to Los Alamos, would have passed through there. David and his father are natives of the state, so it all came together.
