Suzy McKee Charnas - Vampire Tapestry

a well-known professor, hunting the dark corners of the library and college campus for people to overpower and feed upon. He leaves them confused, without a clear memory of him and what happened. He doesn't even have fangs, rather a needle beneath his tongue.

Suzy Mckee Charnas writes character driven Literature. VAMPIRE TAPESTRY is a series of linked short stories. Except for the last two, the stories are written in the view point of other characters, who observe this vampire. It gives us a unique perspective. The vampire himself has more depth, more character than the majority of vampires, who rely on the cliches or traditions. The author takes the time to explore the inside of this vampire, to look at what might create such a creature. It is a very interesting read.

VAMPIRE TAPESTRY certainly deserves its place as a classic vampire novel. It is unique and thought-provoking. It isn't horror. The vampire is no more evil than a wolf or other predator. He isn't a supernatural being but a force of nature. A hunter, who is sometimes hunted, and even for awhile caged.

Anyway, when I was offered a chance to review STAGESTRUCK VAMPIRES, I said yes, because I was curious.

Suzy McKee Charnas' vampire, Weyland, makes his appearance in three short stories in this collection. The first, Unicorn Tapestry, is an interesting tale of the meeting between a psychiatrist and a genuine vampire. Advocates is a more or less successful collaboration between the author and Chelsea Quinn Yarbro that was written for a shared world collection. More or less successful because it was an effort to shoehorn their two vampire characters into an alien world that really suited neither. Also, the ending is one of those ambiguous endings where the reader is supposed to decide how they wanted it to end. She admits that was because neither author could agree on an ending. Still, it
