Suzy McKee Charnas - Vampire Tapestry

as to other forms of the sexy male monster.

I know you wouldn't describe yourself as a vampire author; how would you describe yourself?

Out of the fourteen or so books I've had published over the past thirty years, only two (and maybe a half, counting some of the essays in THE STAGESTRUCK VAMPIRE) are about vampires. Among the rest are books about an imaginary future, YA fantasies about magic, a modern ghost story set in Taos about an artist, and a memoir of my eccentric father. I write whatever appeals to me. What tends to appeal to me is the interplay of society with the character and deeds of the rogue individual; the intersection of real life and all the imagined beings and conditions of our hopes and fears; and the nature of our fascination with magic and the supernatural in all its forms. You know; weird stuff.

What projects are you currently working on?

A new story of mine, about shamanism, will appear on the SCIFI.COM site sometime this summer (it's called "Heavy Lifting"). What would you like to tell the readers?

Don't listen to anyone who insists on telling you what to think and how to think it. The more "authority" they claim to have, the bigger liars and frauds they are, the smaller they are in character of their own, and the more scared they are of *you*. Find your own way: it's the only path worth walking.

A creature who has hibernated and reawakened many times. While he may not remember what precisely happened in his previous lives, he does remember the lessons and skills he has learned. But with each awakening, he has had to adapt to a new evolved and changed world. This lifetime he has made himself a
