Tourism Board Responds to Terror

Tourism has taken a big hit since the September 11 terrorist attacks. In Las Vegas thousands of hotel workers have been laid off due to decreased occupancy. In the numbers game, Las Vegas is not alone. St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix hotel occupancies have been incredibly low (as low as 10 percent) and as one long-time resident put it, “The numbers we’re seeing now reflect the aftermath of a major Hurricane.” While there have been no Hurricanes here this season the decreased amount of visitors have sent tremors through all in the tourism industry.

In response the Tourism Board has launched, “Sea to Shining Sea”, a new ad campaign in with color advertisements as large as 12 inches featured in the Washington Post, New York Daily News, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, and San Juan Star. Advertisements will also be featured in prominent magazines such as Bon Appetit, Town & Country, Bride's, Modern Bride and Travel Weekly. A beautiful tropical sunrise over the island of St. John features the caption “We're the first place the sun rises on U.S. soil, and it is an honor that warms our hearts." The rest of the ad reads, "We may not live on the USA mainland but we are Americans at heart. We share your hopes for a free and peaceful future. And we invite you to share in the beauty of our islands. To plan your visit, call 800-372-USVI, your travel agent or visit http://www.usvitourism.vi/"

Tourism Commissioner Pamela Richards says in the release, "This is the first time the Department of Tourism has made advancements of this magnitude to generate such a strong national presence. Our goal throughout the new marketing and public relations campaign is to emphasize the ease of travel to America's Caribbean -- St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas -- and show all Americans that the USVI is one of the most beautiful getaways under the United States flag." Some hotels are reporting increased occupancies. While hotel occupancy has been up and down these past few weeks, some resorts have positive reports. On St. Thomas, the Marriott’s Frenchman’s Reef Resort will be at 100% the third week of October with overflow going to the Renaissance Resort. This will certainly be a much needed shot in the arm for the economy as visitors are not only welcomed by the hotels but also by the tour operators, vendors, shop keepers, etc.
