We turned the corner around the cove at Norman Island and began a slow approach to the Willie T, located just at the interior of the cove. We navigated around the boat and turned to dock along the starboard side. As the calypso music wafted through the breeze, our group could see the cluster of island partiers at the bar dancing and whooping it up (you only live once, right?) One local in particular, a middle aged man clearly free from any stateside shame was performing what appeared to be a welcome dance to our group (fully clothed, I might add).
Once docked, we boarded the Willie T. A few words here are necessary to paint a picture. This was described to us as a pirate ship that contains a bar and restaurant. The disclaimer Kelvin mentioned at the beginning of our excursion contained references to the potential for nudity and wild and lascivious behavior. Perfect for the hedonist, but a bit disconcerting to those more modest in nature. Now, I certainly did not expect a fancy gourmet-style layout. Nor was I expecting a surly waiter complete with linen napkin over arm to come and take my order. What I WAS expecting was a clean, moderate establishment with good food and good times. It was a bit like a floating barge as there was rust in many spots and its shape was the only feature that gave this little floating restaurant the appearance of a boat. The area was not clean and the food was marginal at best. The servings were very small and did not satisfy many of our hungry appetites. There was no sink in the public head. I was not happy about the unavailability of running water to wash my hands prior to lunch. But apart from these negative impressions, the place did have some character. The stern area held the bar and dance floor (this was the evil area we were warned about). There was a staircase that led to the top of the boat for aforementioned adventure seekers to jump off the stern into the water. Clothing is entirely optional. On this day, no nude flesh was observed here. Most of our group did enjoy the Willie T. While I heard no complaints one elderly couple appeared not to be particularly amused. I’m not sure what their concierge at the Renaissance told them about the tour but the timid and not so timid divers appeared to be a mild annoyance to them. Most of the men in our group took the plunge, fully clothed. I’m sure had there been an incentive for them to go in their birthday suit, they would have. But that’s just my theory. Go To Page: 1 2
