Why do the BVI? Part II

Our bus ride to the Baths was approximately 20 minutes. Along the way we were greeted with quaint visions of Caribbean life on a small island. The landscape was generally arid and masonry homes dotted the roadside. It appeared to be local laundry day as most of the dwellings had clothes on the line. One home featured a “cradle to casket” fenced yard. Drying clothes for the living inhabitants swayed in the breeze right next door to the more permanent inhabitants tucked away in their above ground gravesite.

Our group arrived at the top of the Baths around 10:30am and we were told to be back for a noon departure. With Cam as our leader we easily made our way downhill toward the Baths. The end of this trek led us to the entrance. There were restrooms for a brief pit stop. Upon my partaking of the facilities, I found myself in a fix as I realized every woman’s nightmare. Ready for action, so to speak, with NO toilet paper. Well, lets just get some paper towels then. Nope. Foiled again. Suffice it to say (at least for the women’s side) the facilities were sandy, dirty, wet and without essential stock.

After a quick count of heads we proceeded through the Baths. Our first shock to the visual senses was in the Cathedral Room. Picture yourself inside the crux of two giant boulders with the Caribbean Sea lapping in and out of the small opening in the distance. Cam explained to our eager group that photo shoots occur there from time to time. We were quickly led through the remainder of the Baths area. Doing so required a bit of physical effort, so this part of the tour is not for the elderly or anyone with hip or knee problems. All guests should be advised of the efforts required, as one never knows what conditions may apply to a particular individual. We climbed up rocks and pulled on ropes for support. Other areas require one to duck down to their knees and squeeze though tiny openings. The wet and sandy rocks can behave as ice toward any soul that fails to maintain a conservative step.

Back in the light of day, we were greeted with a glorious vision of the rocky beach area. We found ourselves smack on the edge of the crystal clear blue water lapping against the white sandy shore. Throughout the shoreline giant boulders dotted the beach area to create a human size maze. Our thirty minutes at the beach went by very quickly especially for the men anxious to assist the topless sunbathers at the end. Well, at least they had assistance on their mind.
